Savory Spice Shop Turns 8!
September marked the 8th year that Savory has been in business. We want to thank everyone who has supported us along the way; customers, friends, family and employees alike. We are excited to be entering our ninth holiday season at our first shop on Platte Street in Denver. We wanted to share with you some behind-the-scene highlights on the journey we took to get there.
Although we left Chicago for Denver in late April of 2004, the idea to open Savory was conceived in 2002. When we were discussing where we would want to open, options included San Diego, Santa Fe and the Denver area. After visiting Denver first, it was a no-brainer. We fell in love the city, the weather and mountains, and never made it to the other two cities. While here, we visited Boulder, Fort Collins and more. On one of our visits in early 2003, we had actually looked at Platte Street. We loved it because it had the feel of an up-and-coming area in Chicago.
By April 2004 we were ready to take the plunge and make the move. We had saved some money and sold our condo to the first bidder, whose last name just happened to be Curry! We arrived in Denver on May 1st with the snow blowing sideways. So much for the 300+ days of sun we were promised! But, in true Denver form, we were in shorts within days.
After scouring the Denver area we ended up finding the perfect space back on Platte Street in the Big Chief Bottling Co. building. The space was in real need of repair and we set to work. We got our hands dirty during construction and even found some cool artifacts from the building's past life. Some of which included thick hand-blown bottles with ceramic stoppers imprinted with what would now be the address of the first Savory Spice Shop.
Once the physical space was ready, we then started receiving inventory, banging out blends, bottling and labeling to get ready for the big day. We opened on Wednesday, September 15, 2004. Like many first-time small business owners, this was it. All of our savings, blood, sweat and tears were in this endeavor and it was time to make it or break it.
We made $97.13 on that day and could not have been happier. The rest is history, made by you and our wonderful employees.
