Joe's Kansas City BBQ: Kansas City, KS

The second stop in KC and stop number 84 for those keeping count (me!) was at the original historic Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que location, often voted one of the top BBQ joints in the country. The place looks the part, operating in a gas station, but it's not just about looks...the locals love and support it madly. There is always a line, it's just a matter of how long. We got a bit lucky and only ran into 10-15 people in front of us.
When you've become the BBQ machine that Joe's has, it's not easy for anyone to step out of their critical role and give much time to a BBQ chaser, but they somehow still made it happen. Jerry Taylor, a long time employee and now part of the management team, filled us in on some Joe's history and gave a us a nice behind the scenes tour. The place is surprisingly big with a least 5 Old Hickory and/or Southern Pride smokers working away.
The item that they promote the most on their menu is the Z-man sandwich, so we ordered up one of those and short end ribs, turkey, sausage and a side of beans. The highlights were the tender brisket, provolone and onion ring stacked Z-man and some pretty dang good ribs. Cool spot to check out if you're visiting...I only addressed that to visitors because I'm pretty sure everyone within 30 miles of KC has already been there! #chasingbbq
