Refresh: Keeping the Freshest Herbs
& Spices

“How do I keep my spices fresh?” is a question that we frequently get in our stores. Keeping the freshest spices is essential to preparing a wonderfully flavorful meal. If your spices aren’t fresh, you won’t be able to taste the symphony of flavors that are hidden in your food when you pair ingredients with freshly ground herbs and spices. With spring right in front of us, there is no better time to go through your spice rack and see what needs replacing.


To determine what you should keep and what should be tossed, our Training Coordinator Samuel Garrett shares the  “tricks of the trade” on keeping your spices fresh!

Reduce: 3 Recipes • 3 Ways
Here are three recipes that you can make three different ways depending on what spices, herbs, and seasonings need to get used up from your spice rack. You can take
these suggested variations or be adventurous and create your own unique flavor profiles using the base recipes for inspiration.

Mary's Scones 3-Ways
Mary's scones are famous at Savory Spice Shop's warehouse. Her original Cherry Orange Vanilla flavor features vanilla bean paste and Savory Spice Shop's own blend of Vanilla Bean Sugar. But you can also take these in a tropical direction with Barrier Reef Caribbean Style Seasoning and coconut extract, or in a savory direction with Herbes de Provence and cheese.

Sloppy Joes
While we love this family classic with our Platte River Rib Rub, this super easy recipe can be made with any of your favorite barbeque-inspired seasonings, like Homestead Seasoning or Black Hills BBQ Seasoning. You could even it in a Southwestern direction and use Family Style Fajita Seasoning or El Diente Peak Southwestern Seasoning. The sky's the limit on this one!

Loaded Baked Potato Salad 3-Ways
This classic base recipe for potato salad can be seasoned with a trip around the world depending on what spices and fresh herbs you have on hand. Escape to Greece by using Mt. Eolus Greek Style Seasoning and fresh parsley. Give it an Asian flair with Indochina Seasoning and fresh cilantro. Or keep it all-American with Castle Peak Cheese Sprinkle and scallions.




Recycle: Bring A Bottle. Buy A Bottle. Save A Buck
Generally when it comes to home recycling programs aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and cardboard boxes are often the primary staples collected. However, plastic and glass spice or seasoning containers are a commonly overlooked items when it comes to home recycling. This leads to landfills being unnecessarily inundated with plastic containers.

Howdy, I like the idea of reducing the impact of my choices on the environment. Ordering via the internet saves a long trip to the store for me. Shipping replacement supplies in plastic bags to refill the splendid heavy bottles will reduce subsequent purchases' impact. We all change the world every day by our choices. If you amble past a bakery or a fine restaurant you will notice how the business colors the neighborhood with aromatic advertising. Even if you are not hungry your nose will appreciate the treat. Share the odors and share the love...
