10 Salt-Free Seasonings for Flavor-Filled Meals

With more than 300 salt-free products lining the Savory Spice shelves it’s hard to choose just 10 of my favorites, but I will try. Whether you’re on a salt-free diet or just trying to reduce your salt intake, here are my top picks for salt-free seasonings that can help add flavor to your meals without the added sodium.

10 Salt-Free Seasonings for Flavor-Filled Meals

1. Mt. Baker Chai Spice Seasoning

I’m a huge fan of chai flavors and Mt. Baker Chai Spice Seasoning is essentially ground chai in a bottle. I don’t know what I’d do without Mt. Baker in my spice cabinet—I use it in everything from oatmeal to grilled meats to roasted veggies. Generously sprinkle it over pork chops or chicken breasts before cooking and you’ll get such a great punch of flavor that you won’t even miss the salt.

Try it with: Grilled Chai Pork Chops

2. Mexican Adobo Style

Adobo is a common all-purpose Latin seasoning typically used for marinating meat, chicken, and seafood. Different Latin cultures have their own versions of what goes into an adobo seasoning. Our salt-free Mexican version is a dry adobo seasoning featuring green chile, cumin, and Mexican oregano. I use it for seasoning taco meat, fish, guacamole, salsa, and all kinds of Latin-inspired sides.

Try it with: Adobo Rice

3. Bengal Bay "Panch Phoron"

This is a traditional Indian seasoning made from five whole seeds: fenugreek mustard, charnushka, cumin, and fennel. It’s earthy, sweet, and mild. I like to use it in yogurt-based marinades for veggies or chicken. You can toast and grind it into a powder to season potatoes or sprinkle over your favorite protein. I use it as a seasoning for carrot or lentil soups. I like to simmer the whole spice blend in the soup while it cooks. Blending the soup then grinds the spices to release even more flavor.

Try it with: Ghee Roasted Potatoes
4. Garam Masala

I think I like Garam Masala so much because it has a hint of chai flavor with its cardamom, cloves, and black pepper. Technically it’s a curry blend, so it’s more like the savory counterpart to chai. It’s less sweet (no ginger or cinnamon) and more savory (with coriander, charnushka, and cumin) than chai. Traditionally it’s used for lamb, veggies, and fish. I use it in mashed sweet potatoes and barbecue sauces. It also makes a unique baking spice—try it in pumpkin pie!

Try it with: Maple Garam Masala Ham

5. Asian Style Sprinkle

This all-purpose blend is packed with flavors you may associate with Asian cuisine: black and white sesame seeds, wasabi, cilantro, green onion, ginger, and toasted seaweed. I use it for a flavorful twist on chicken salad. It makes an impressive party dip mixed into yogurt or sour cream. My colleague, Stephanie, stirs it into her cottage cheese for a quick snack. You can also generously rub a tuna steak with it to create a flavorful crust for seared ahi.

Try it with: Asian Style Ranch Dressing

6. California Citrus Rub

Citrus is an amazing substitute for salt. In this blend, the tart flavors of orange and lemon are balanced by black pepper and crushed red pepper for a bit of heat. A hint of parsley gives it a refreshing finish. Use it to season marinades and vinaigrettes, rub it over a whole chicken before roasting, or simply sprinkle it over cooked veggies, fish, or French fries.

Try it with: Spicy Orange & Watercress Salad

7. Yellow Curry Powder

Yellow Curry Powder (available in mild, medium, or hot) is a great choice for adding flavor without adding salt. Use it to season your favorite soup—I use it in tomato, carrot, and cauliflower soups. Mix it into a creamy dip for veggies or pita chips. Sprinkle it into your deviled eggs or potato salad. It’s also surprisingly delicious in sweet treats like caramel corn, brownies, or blondies.

Try it with: Light Curry Dip

8. Thai Green Curry

Thai Green Curry is a weeknight staple in my household. We mix equal parts curry powder, oil, and water to make a simple and flavorful paste. We use that paste as the base of a stir fry or coconut curry that we concoct with whatever is in the fridge. You can also use this curry powder to season tuna salad, fried rice, or homemade aioli. It’s delicious as a marinade or rub for a block of tofu or piece of flank steak that you plan on grilling.

9. Woody Creek BBQ Seasoning

This blend proves that you don’t need salt to make great barbecue! This is the perfect all-purpose seasoning to add barbecue bite to sauces, veggies, and chicken. Simmer it with tomato sauce or tomato paste for a salt-free, homemade ketchup. Mix it into sour cream for a chip dip or mayo for a sandwich spread. I like to use it to season bread crumbs, which I use as a topping for mac and cheese or as a coating for baked chicken breasts.

10. Bohemian Forest European Style Seasoning

I saved the best for last. This herb-filled blend is complemented by the sharp bite of mustard and the sweet aroma of lavender. One of my favorite cozy weekend meals is a whole chicken rubbed with Bohemian Forest and cooked in a slow cooker on low for 6 to 8 hours. You can drizzle the seasoned drippings over the chicken, which literally falls off the bone. I also love this blend with roasted or mashed potatoes or baked white fish. Bohemian Forest is so popular that we featured it in Savory’s first cookbook, Spice to Plate.
