Soup! It's What's for Dinner

There is nothing like soup to warm your body and your soul. It is the only dish that transcends class and rank. It is the only food equally adored by the masses. There is a good reason for this. Soup preparation is the oldest type of cooking that exists. It literally goes back to the roots of civilization. There is proof of ancient people cooking soup back to 6000 B.C.— when one of the main ingredients would have been hippopotamus!

If you think about it, making soup was one of the easiest cooking methods around: combine nutritious ingredients in a pot and boil until edible. In the beginning, there weren’t any soup receptacles around to be put over a fire. This is where the legend of “stone soup” came from. I learned this tale back in kindergarten and it has always stuck with me.

Stone Soup: A Delicious Tale

A beggar knocks on a cottage door looking for food or a place to stay. A woman answers the door and is hesitant to let anyone enter her home. With a silver tongue he promises her the soup of a lifetime made from the stone in his pocket. He pulls out a smooth river stone, and she reluctantly lets him in. He sets the stone into the embers of her fire place until it is red-hot. He throws it into a cauldron of water. He tastes the soup thoughtfully. “This would really taste better with some vegetables and potatoes,” he says. The woman hurriedly agrees and supplies the produce. After several more minutes and thoughtful tasting, he states, “This would taste so much better with some hen or fowl.” She quickly butchers an annoying roaster chicken and throws it in the pot. After much deliberate thought, the beggar declares the rock soup perfect and they eat almost the whole pot. They leave enough for the woman’s husband for when he gets home. The beggar licks the stone clean, puts it into his pocket. The woman thanks him profusely for the magical stone soup, and with a smile the beggar is on his way again.

I’m not going to lie. After hearing this story, I would put stones in my soup claiming it would make it better. It took a couple of years for the lesson to sink in. It’s the heart, soul, and ingredients that you put into your soup (and food) that makes it magical. Here are some of my favorite Savory soup recipes for you to try:

Kate’s Quick & Easy Tomato Soup: This takes less than 10 minutes to prepare and uses ingredients you likely already have in your spice rack, including tomato powder, bouillon cubes, garlic salt, and Turkish bay leaves.


Italian Style Vegetarian Farro Soup: This is a great excuse to try our fines herb bouillon cubes if you haven’t yet. It would also work with other vegetarian bouillon like onion or truffle. I highly recommend the suggested sprinkle of Italian black truffle sea salt before serving this hearty meal.
