Ingredients:

  • For the cookies:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 egg
  • *flavoring (see options)
  • For the glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 Tbsp. water or milk
  • *flavoring (see options)
  • *Flavoring options (choose one per batch):

  • *Mexican Mole

  • Cookies: 2 Tbsp. Mexican Mole
  • Glaze: 3 Tbsp. Dutch cocoa powder
  • Garnish: white sesame seeds
  • *Rosemary-Orange

  • Cookies: 1 Tbsp. ground rosemary, ½ Tbsp. cracked rosemary and 1 Tbsp. orange flower water
  • Glaze: 1 tsp. orange flower water
  • Garnish: cracked rosemary

Notes:

This is a great master recipe to flavor with your favorite spices.

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat together butter and sugar until creamy. Mix in flavoring ingredients. Mix flour, baking powder and salt together in a separate bowl, then stir into flavored butter and sugar mixture until incorporated. Stir in egg until dough is smooth. Form dough into 1-inch balls and place 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. (Alternatively, roll dough out on a lightly floured surface to about 1/8-inch thick and cut into desired shapes using cookie cutters.) Bake for 12 to 15 min. until lightly browned. Mix glaze ingredients together in a small bowl. When cookies are cooled completely, spread with a light layer of glaze, then top with recommended garnish if using.
