Meatloaf Sandwich Competition

Our new Seven Onion BBQ Meatloaf has quickly turned into a beloved Spice ‘n Easy mix for us. Everyone in our shop locations and our corporate office has become obsessed. Can you blame us? If you haven’t tried it, we highly recommend doing so. It’s delicious. The only thing better than Seven Onion BBQ Meatloaf? Leftover Seven Onion BBQ Meatloaf sandwiches. Test Kitchen Chefs Michael and Ashlee were challenged by Savory co-founder, Mike, to see who could make the best sandwich with leftover Seven Onion BBQ Meatloaf. Both accepted Mike’s challenge to a (somewhat) friendly competition.

The Rules:

The rules were simple--use leftover Seven Onion BBQ Meatloaf from the day before to make the best meatloaf sandwich. Mike, Michael, and Ashlee had 30 minutes and a fully stocked Test Kitchen to create a meatloaf sandwich masterpiece to present to three judges.

The Contestants

Mike

Co-Founder of Savory Spice

Entry: Greekloaf Gyro

Mike’s mom’s side of his family is Greek, so he grew up eating Gyros. His wife, Janet, actually suggested this idea to Mike. “Greekloaf concept made perfect sense. Gyros are basically just a meatloaf that’s on a spit,” Mike said. “I love the challenge of using up leftover ingredients in the fridge.”

So he was ready to impress the judges.

Mike’s Secret Ingredients

  • Leftover Seven Onion BBQ Meatloaf, sliced into 1/8 thick strips, fried in vegetable oil
  • Cucumber slices
  • Tomato slices
  • Mixed greens
  • Hummus
  • Pita flatbread

For tzatziki sauce:

Entry: Meatcube Marinara Sub

Michael had never had a meatball marinara sub before, “I’ve always heard about how much people love them,” said Michael.

So he figured the judges would love it and he wanted to try it for himself to see what the hype is about. “Plus, I knew we had a Spice ‘n Easy mix that would make the marinara super easy to make.”

Mike’s Secret Ingredients

  • Leftover Seven Onion BBQ Meatloaf, cubed
  • Rustic Red Sauce (Just add a can of diced tomatoes, heat, and puree for perfect marinara!)
  • Provolone cheese
  • 4 hoagie buns
  • Butter, melted and infused with fresh garlic for hoagie buns
  • Chopped parsley

Ashlee

Test Kitchen Chef

Entry: New American Diner Classic

Ashlee Cooking Meatloaf Sandwich | Savory Spice

Ashlee was inspired by American diner cuisine “You can’t go wrong with a classic sandwich,” said Ashlee.

Sometimes keeping it simple is all you need to do!

Ashlee’s Secret Ingredients

  • Leftover Seven Onion BBQ Meatloaf, sliced & seared
  • Roasted tomato & chipotle ketchup
  • Homemade beer-battered onion rings
  • Arugula
  • 4 Brioche buns

Judges Picks:

Judging the Meatloaf Competition | Savory Spice

These sandwiches were anonymously presented to our Graphic Designer, Jonathan, Distribution Assistant Manager, James, and Warehouse Operations Manager, Stephanie. The sandwiches were judged based on taste, appearance, the use of the Seven Onion BBQ Meatloaf, and creativity of the sandwich name.

Jonathan’s pick: Michael’s Meatcube Marinara Sub because he’s a “sucker for a meat and cheese combo.”

James’ pick: Ashlee’s New American Diner Classic because it was a “great pairing and had amazing flavor.”

Stephanie’s pick: Michael’s Meatcube Marinara Sub because “the sauce was a perfect complement to the meatloaf. The meatloaf was the star of the show.”

The Results:

Taste: Michael’s Meatcube Marinara Sub

Appearance: Ashlee’s New American Diner Classic

Use of meatloaf: Michael’s Meatcube Marinara Sub

Sandwich name: Mike’s Greekloaf Gyro

These sandwiches were anonymously presented to our Graphic Designer, Jonathan, Distribution Assistant Manager, James, and Warehouse Operations Manager, Stephanie. The sandwiches were judged based on taste, appearance, the use of the Seven Onion BBQ Meatloaf, and creativity of the sandwich name.

#1 Michael’s Meatcube Marinara Sub

#2 Ashlee’s New American Diner Classic

#3 Mike’s Greekloaf Gyro

All sandwiches were strong contenders, but let’s be honest, the judges were the real winners of this competition... because they ate three amazing sandwiches.
