Reel Tasty: Pairing Popcorn Flavors and Movies

Ah, movies – the perfect way to escape from all our worries, responsibilities and pressures of the world, two hours at a time. Whether you enjoy a tear-jerking rom-com or like to have the bejesus scared out of you with a horror flick, there’s one thing that is a must have: popcorn.

I love a good traditional bowl of popcorn with lots of butter and salt, but with the release of our newest gift set, Get Poppin’, I decided to expand my popcorn palate. I took it upon myself to try our Buffalo Bleu DIp & Dressing, Honey Powder, Paris Cheese Sprinkle and County Clare Seasoning Salt, with the additional challenge of matching each popcorn spice flavor with its perfect film pairing for maximum enjoyment.

Buffalo Bleu Dip & Dressing: Where the Buffalo Roam

I started my journey by pairing Dances With Wolves with Buffalo Bleu Dip & Dressing. This nearly four-hour cinematic masterpiece starring Kevin Costner (who also directed) is about a soldier that befriends wolves and Sioux American Indians. Costner’s character enjoys the simplicity of the indiginous lifestyle, falls in love and becomes part of the Sioux tribe. Buffalo Bleu Dip & Dressing paired perfectly with the film not only because there are buffalo in the movie, but because the spiciness of buffalo sauce and tang of bleu cheese flavor in the seasoning takes you on an epic flavor journey that, like the film, is entirely satisfying.

Honey Powder: Such A Sweet Flick

Next I moved on to an oldie but goodie – Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. I made the obvious choice and matched this movie with, you guessed it, Honey Powder. For the record, anything that stars Rick Moranis is automatically a perfect movie (hello Ghostbusters, Spaceballs and Little Shop of Horrors). And Honey Powder is just as perfect in its subtle sweetness, which provides the flavor characteristics of honey, but without the liquid, goopy mess. It can also be used as a compliment to spicy flavors, like in our recipe for Chile Cheese Popcorn. All in all, if you like a sweeter flavor on your popcorn, you’ll love Honey Powder.

Paris Cheese Sprinkle: A Rat and a Chef Travel to Paris

Time to gather up the kids, a bowl of popcorn and a family-friendly favorite because my next team-up was Ratatouille and Paris Cheese Sprinkle. The film’s premise is pretty catchy: A rat with an exquisite palate dreams of being a fine French chef, despite the obvious problem of being a rat in a decidedly rodent-phobic profession. Our Paris Cheese Sprinkle is very complex (just like the struggle of a rat being a chef) and its savory combination of rich flavors and herby tones make it perfect for popcorn. Check out our recipe for Paris Cheese Popcorn and give it a try yourself!

County Clare Seasoning Salt: A Rom-Com for Every Four Years

I’ve been known to enjoy a romantic comedy from time to time, so I decided to pair Leap Year starring Amy Adams with County Clare Seasoning Salt. County Clare is an area of Ireland where corn fields are in abundance – so naturally this seasoning salt is perfect on popcorn. Its an oniony, peppery seasoning with citrus, herbal, and garlic notes that’s easy to fall in love with, just like the film. Pro tip: I followed our County Clare Butter recipe to help coat the popcorn with seasoning and butter.

There you have it, the perfect collection of movies to pair with our new Get Poppin’ Gift Set. With three varieties of popcorn kernels and four distinct seasonings, there are a variety of flavor experiences to enjoy – even more so with the right film.
