If you love to camp like I do, you know that cooking can be a challenge when you have limited space and resources. Lucky for me, I’ve learned how to make almost anything taste good while camping using Savory’s hundreds of spice options. I recently embarked on a ten day road trip in Utah with my boyfriend, Jameson, along with one small cooler, a fully packed car, a tight budget, and a ton of spices. Read about how we used Savory Spices to cook delicious meals every day.
When you want to wake up and hit the trails right away, breakfast can often get neglected. So what is a delicious option you can whip up quickly? If you have a camping stove or water boiler, I recommend oatmeal and instant coffee. It may not sound very appealing, but bear with me.
Oatmeal can easily be made with hot water, dehydrated fruit, and spices. Georgia Peach Spice is my favorite to add to oatmeal because it kicks it up a notch, pairs well with every fruit, and isn’t overly sweet. To go with your oatmeal, make some instant coffee and add Vanilla Bean Sugar. This sugar is so delicious, you won’t even know you’re drinking instant coffee. Just like that, you have a great, warm breakfast that gives you fuel to take on the day. Once you hit the trails, you’re going to get hungry at some point (or at least I usually do). Jameson taught me about his favorite snack trick: packaged tuna. Paired with some crackers and spices, this simple snack will hit the spot.
My go-to tuna topper is Dill Weed. This snack is great because it won’t take up a lot of room in your pack, but it is filling and satisfying. Packaged tuna also keeps well, even in the most extreme weather conditions. With your crackers and packaged tuna, make sure to condense spices you want to bring so you aren’t carrying jars along with you. I put all of my spices in bags before our trip to save room in our car and in our packs.
If you want a yummy and hearty lunch, make a pizza! Premade pizza dough that doesn’t require refrigeration makes this super easy. Then just top with your favorite sauce, cheese, and veggies. I use chopped bell pepper and onion because they do not require refrigeration either which means cheese is the only thing you need to keep in a cooler. Then I like to top my pizza off with my go-to spice, Roasted Granulated Garlic. Our Pizza & Pasta Sprinkle is another great choice if you prefer an herbaceous flavor. You can bake your pizza on a fire in foil, in a cast iron skillet, or in a dutch oven.
If you’re looking for a quicker lunch, canned veggies and soups are a lifesaver when you’re camping. Canned goods are super easy to heat up over a camping stove and have minimal clean up. With the help of spices, canned goods transform into a delicious lunch. My favorite thing to add to canned vegetables is our Citrus Pepper Seasoning. This blend is the one Jameson and I use most at home and while camping. The citrus flavor completely upgrades canned vegetables, especially green beans and corn.
There are many options for campfire dinners, but my all-time favorite thing to cook is something I call hobos. I learned how to make hobos as a kid at summer camp. I love them so much that when my mom asked what I wanted to do for my tenth birthday, I told her I wanted to make hobos with my friends.
So what are hobos and why would a ten-year-old want to have a hobo birthday party? Also known as foil packets, hobos are meals made over the campfire in foil and they are so easy to make. I originally learned to make them with hamburger meat, veggies, barbecue sauce, salt, and pepper. You can do many things with hobos, even make delicious breakfast skillets.
On our trip, Jameson and I decided to make a twist on the “classic” hobo. Both of our hobos consisted of onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, potatoes, and ground beef. I slathered mine with our Sweet Jerk Barbecue Sauce (available through July 31, 2018) and a touch of TSM Kansas City BBQ Rub. Jameson opted for our new Worcestershire Sauce and Kansas City Stip Steak Seasoning. Then we put our hobos on the fire for about 15 minutes and waited for the delicious results. So, whose hobo was better? I cannot answer that because they were both amazing. After a long day of being outside, hobos are the best meal you can make, I promise you.
For an even easier dinner, I recommend our Rustic Red Sauce Spice ‘n Easy. One night, when it was starting to hail, we quickly boiled water for pasta and made the Rustic Red Sauce with some dehydrated veggies on our camping stove. We did it in the nick of time and hurried into our tent before a downpour. Not only was it quick and simple, it saved us from starving during the rainstorm!
Just because you’re camping, doesn’t mean you should skip dessert. Have fun with classic s’mores by sprinkling Chicharron Salt on top of your roasted marshmallows. Chicharron Salted s'mores make a great sweet and salty dessert at the end of an adventurous day. Jameson prefers his dessert in the form of whiskey, so Test Kitchen Chef Dan Baker gifted Jameson some Smoked Sugar Cubes for the perfect sweet treat.
