Burger Madness

We’ve all heard the saying, “As American as apple pie.” Not to burst your bubble, but apple tarts have existed in various forms since the Middle Ages. Hamburgers, on the other hand, are quintessentially American. May is National Hamburger Month and we’re ready to fire up the grill!

Today, the hamburger is ubiquitous. Such a common food must have a long history, right? Not so. As with any beloved dish, there are widespread claims of certain individuals being ‘the first’ to create the burger. Regardless, it’s clear that the hamburger we all know was created in the late 1800s or very early 1900s.

Featured at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, the popularity of this simple sandwich creation quickly spread nationwide. Within a few years, the term ‘burger’ was used for beef as well as other meats and seafood patties on a bun. By the 1920s, with burger joints opening across the country, the classic combo of a burger, fries, and a shake became standard at soda shops and roadside diners. A few years later, the first printed reference to cheeseburgers appeared. And by the 50s and 60s, the familiar golden arches became an iconic symbol for this American meal.

By some estimates, today’s nationwide consumption of burgers averages three per person per week. The ingredients and combinations are limitless, accommodating all tastes and diets. Beef, bison, turkey, salmon, and black beans are all common proteins. But more exotic burgers like elk, tilapa, lamb, wild boar, mahi mahi, and alligator are also surprisingly easy to find. Tried and true toppings of ketchup, mustard, lettuce, onion, tomato, and pickles now share the stage with bacon, aioli, slaw, caramelized onions, green chile, peanut butter, pineapple, and even truffles.

Here at Savory Spice Shop, we love the endless flavor possibilities burgers present. Try mixing in or sprinkling on one of our ‘Top Five for Burgers’ with your next patty.

  • Homestead Seasoning: Salt and pungent garlic, sweet honey and zesty mustard, and piquant pepper and warm paprika combine to create a flavor that is familiar and versatile. Homestead is perfect for both seasoning your burgers and sprinkling on your fries!
  • Hudson Bay Beef Spice: The coarse grind makes this blend ideal for mixing into meat. Salt, pepper, coriander, and rosemary pair perfectly with classic beef burgers.
  • Red Rocks Hickory Smoke Seasoning: This blend captures the mouthwatering, smoky essence of the perfect barbeque. Top your Red Rocks burger with a slice of cheese and onions (preferably fried!)
  • Table Mt. All-Purpose Seasoning: Herbs and spices collide in this seasoning that is perfect for any burger–from turkey to beef, bison to salmon. You can also use it to season your favorite BBQ sides.
  • Wash Park All-Purpose Seasoning: A customer favorite, this blend is a little bit of everything all rolled into one—pepper, sugar, garlic, salt, bell peppers, and herbs. Burgers, chicken, pasta salad, potato salad, slaw…there’s really nothing this seasoning isn’t good on!

Classics with a twist: Known in various parts of the country as “inside out” or “Juicy Lucy” burgers, our version of Outside In Burgers with Sweet & Spicy Ketchup has a melty cheesy center. The customer-created Great Plains ‘4B’ Bison Burger is the adult version of the classic cheeseburger. ‘4B’ refers to the bison, bleu cheese, basil, and bacon that give this burger layers and layers of flavor.

Taste of the tropics: Just in time for summer, we also have a few Caribbean inspired burgers. If you enjoy the flavors of jerk chicken, try our Jamaican Jerk Burgers. Top these with Grilled Pineapple and Avocado Dip for even more tropical flair. Or for a quick and easy weeknight burger topping, simply mix a bit of Jamaican Jerk Seasoning into mayonnaise and add some peppery arugula lettuce for a bit of crunch. Our Bajan “TNT” Burgers also have a bit of crunch from the Caribbean Spiced Slaw topping. Bajan Seasoning is a refreshing herb-laden seasoning that is perfect in these burgers, which also have a surprising summer twist with the inclusion of fresh tangerine bits. Before toasting the buns, don’t forget to spread them with ginger and allspice infused Caribbean Butter!

Whether you go for the classics or the more creative burger combinations this summer, here's to a season of great grilling. Happy National Hamburger Month!
