Chasing BBQ: An Alabama & Georgia Feast

After leaving Memphis, the land of low-and-slow pork ribs, Savory founder Mike Johnston journeyed through Alabama and Georgia, the land of smoked chicken with white sauce and hot & fast spare ribs, for the third leg of his Chasing BBQ road trip. This is the region where he encountered classic southern inspired barbecue sides, like Brunswick stew, turnip greens, fried okra, and coconut cream pie. We recreated so many southern inspired BBQ recipes in the Savory Spice Test Kitchen that it’s hard to pick favorites, but I will. Here’s how I’d put together an Alabama & Georgia feast for friends.

Beer Can BBQ Chicken & Stefan’s Tangy White BBQ Sauce

Beer Can Chicken

Chicken with a tangy, mayonnaise based white barbecue sauce is an Alabama classic. What I love about this beer can chicken recipe is that you don’t need a smoker to end up with a beautifully barbecued whole chicken. If you want to impart some smoke flavor while you grill the chicken, try one of our easy-to-use Smoker Cans; they’re filled with quick smoking wood pellets and work on a gas or charcoal grill. For an authentic Alabama experience, don’t skip Stefan’s no-cook, flavorful white BBQ sauce!

Hot & Fast Ribs & Woody’s Peach BBQ Sauce
There are two reasons I love hot & fast ribs: the awesome char flavor you get using this quick-grilling method and the fact that you don’t need a smoker to make them. They yield a different flavor and texture than low-and-slow smoked ribs, but are equally delicious. Woody’s barbecue sauce is made with pureed peaches and Georgia Peach Spice. The sweet-spiced sauce is a perfect match for the charred ribs.

Cajun Fried Okra
Fried Cajun OkraNo southern BBQ plate is complete without fried okra. These are easy to make and yield a super crunchy fried bite. Plus, the all-cornmeal coating makes these gluten-free! They’re seasoned with an addictive Cajun salt, a blend of Cajun Style Blackening Seasoning and kosher salt. I guarantee they’ll be gobbled up quickly.

Southern Style Turnip Greens
I thought I was more of a collard greens girl before I made these—turnip greens may be my new favorite. Flavored simply with bacon, broth, and Wash Park All-Purpose Seasoning, these are done within an hour of starting them on the stovetop. If you have any leftovers, they make a great breakfast side with scrambled eggs and biscuits.

Coconut Cream Pie
This is always on any list of classic southern desserts. Our version has a twist, with the addition of rich, flavorful allspice to the graham crust.  Combined with coconut extract and shredded coconut, this creamy dessert has a bit of Caribbean flair.
