Baking Holiday Cookies
Early December may be mid-holiday season but it’s also the kickoff for what might be an even more important time of the year…cookie season! The sweet little treats make excellent gifts or great snacks for holiday guests. Try out some of our top recipes for the most legendary cookie jar in town! Cinnamon Sugar Cookies
A snickerdoodle by any other name tastes just as sweet! Cinnamon Sugar Tableside Sprinkle is a great little shortcut for these slightly crispy cookies. If you want to add a unique spin, try using Natural Hazelnut Extract or Imitation Black Walnut Extract in place of vanilla for a bit of nutty flavor.
Laura’s Peanut Butter Black Onyx Dream Cookies
These are snickerdoodles’ chocolatey, peanut-buttery companion. Using crunchy peanut butter lends a great texture to the cookies while the Black Onyx Chocolate Sugar coating provides a deep cocoa flavor with a hint of cinnamon.
Milk’s actual favorite cookie! These are made up of a creamy vanilla filling that is sandwiched between chocolate cookies made with two different cocoa powders, including the alkalized Black Onyx Cocoa Powder. The alkalization process creates a chocolate flavor that is less bitter and has a smoother taste than other cocoas. You may want to make extra of these; they disappear quickly!
Chicharron Salted Caramel Cookies
In the Savory Spice Test Kitchen, we get requests for these cookies all the time! These are like a choose-your-own-adventure: when they are still soft, the caramel is gooey and smooth. If given an extra minute or two in the oven, the caramel becomes crispy and chewy. Either way, they are best served warm out of the oven with a generous sprinkle of Chicharron Salt and a glass of milk. You’re welcome.
Melt-in-Your-Mouth Lavender Shortbread
The subtle, floral notes of lavender can be a welcome interlude during the season of cinnamon, cloves, and allspice. These drop-style cookies come together quickly and can be made with Pakistan Rosebuds & Petals instead of Lavender. Serve with a warm cup of tea on a cold day!
Sesame Fig Thumbprint Cookies
These adorable little cookies have a pleasant nuttiness from freshly ground Toasted White Sesame Seeds. Dried figs are cooked with black pepper, Dehydrated Minced Orange Peel, and Vanilla Bean Sugar for a complexly-flavored sweet filling. Use these as a sweet addition to your holiday cheese plate.
Peppernuts (Anise Cookies)
Growing up around Mennonites in the Midwest, Dutch peppernuts hold a special place in my heart! These tiny cookies, also known as Pfeffernüsse, can be spiced with a variety of warm, aromatic spices but our version has strong anise notes along with cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. The recipe makes quite a few peppernuts, but you can freeze any extra or package them in jars wrapped with ribbons for cute gifts. Enjoy with a strong cup of coffee!
Choose-a-Flavor Meringue Cookies
The ultimate customizable sweets! Flavor with your choice of extracts, add in fun food colors, and pipe into whatever little shapes you’d like. These would be a fun project to do with kids on a cold day when everyone is stuck inside!
Chai Iced Hermits
While cookies are delicious, bars are super underrated. These make the perfect chewy holiday-season treat, with comforting flavors of Mt. Baker Chai Spice Seasoning, molasses, and vanilla. Cut into little squares and freeze to serve when guests visit.
