Staff Showdown: Deviled Eggs, Round 2

At our home office in Denver, Colorado there are a whole lot of food-loving people in one place, and we all have different preferences when it comes to eating. Some like things spicy while others prefer no heat. Some have a major sweet tooth and others won’t go near a cupcake. But there’s one food that brings us all together: deviled eggs.

Last year, as Easter approached, talk turned to “what the heck do we do with all those hard boiled eggs?” And soon, our first ever staff Deviled Egg Competition was conceived. We might have declared one winner, but really all that spice experimentation made us all winners ‘cause we got to enjoy a bunch of awesome deviled eggs and share our ideas with all of you!

It turns out we also all enjoy some friendly competition, so we decided to do it all over again this year with different contestants. Presenting: The Savory Staff Deviled Egg Competition, Round 2. Who had the most the most egg-cellent deviled egg recipe this year? Read on to find out and get inspiration for your next round of deviled eggs.

The Judges

2018’s winner: Digital Marketing Specialist Ariana

2018’s runner-up: Test Kitchen Manager Ashlee

Egg Enthusiast: Distribution Manager Marcus

Their job: Judge 6 different deviled eggs based on both taste and appearance. Each judge gave every entry a score of 1-10 in each category.

The Rules

The rules were simple: create the best deviled egg recipe using Savory Spices and a set selection of standard add-ins provided by the Test Kitchen like mayo, mustard, and a sampling of vinegars . Each contestant got 5 whole eggs and 30 minutes in the Test Kitchen to create their recipes.

The Competitors

Cate, Ecommerce Assistant Manager
Entry: Nashville Hot Eggs

Cate’s eggs were inspired by her husband. “He loves Nashville Hot, it’s one of his favorites.” He mainly “uses it on chicken, but loves it on eggs too.”

Molly, Marketing Manager
Entry: Kind of a Big Dill Pickle Eggs

As a judge for last year’s competition, Molly was a big fan of Chris’ deviled eggs topped with potato chips. She knew she wanted to compete in the next competition, and had her “recipe idea stewing for over a year.” Molly “loves dill pickles and salt and vinegar chips, they’re good friends, flavor-wise.”

Jonathan, Graphic Designer
Entry: Jalapeno Popper Eggs

Jonathan was inspired by his “wife’s grandmother’s jalapeno poppers.” They are “stuffed jalapenos wrapped in bacon and they’re delicious.” At family gatherings, Jonathan “tries to eat as many as possible.”

Joseph, Graphic Designer
Entry: Red Bell Ranch Eggs

Joseph wanted to find a seasoning “that had spices similar to the ingredients in a Denver omelet, so onions and bell peppers.” He “thought ranch would be an interesting flavor to go with deviled eggs” so he decided to use Red Bell Ranch for a fun twist. Joseph also thinks you can’t go wrong with ranch, it’s his “jam.”

Mike, Spice Blender
Entry: Asian Deviled Eggs

Mike came up with his recipe when “trying to think of something different other than traditional paprika.” Mike also “loves Asian food” and figured a variety of our Asian seasonings would make the best deviled egg.

Stephanie, Warehouse Operations Manager
Entry: Dilled Devil Eggs

Stephanie “wanted to find a creative and different use for a Spice ‘n Easy” so she went with Horseradish Dill Dip & Spread. “It’s a popular one,” so Stephanie “thought it would make a popular deviled egg.” After this competition, she concluded that Horseradish Dill Dip & Spread would “make a great egg salad.”

Judges Picks

Ashlee, Marcus, and Ariana. 

Ashlee’s Top Pick: Molly’s Kind of a Big Dill Pickle Eggs because “the flavor was balanced” and she “really liked the crunch.”

Marcus’ Top Pick: Also Molly’s Kind of a Big Dill Pickle Eggs because he “loved the potato chips with the egg, they went together really well.”

Ariana’s Top Pick: Jonathan’s Jalapeno Popper Eggs because it had “bacon and creamy fattiness, but it wasn’t too salty.” Ariana “could eat 10 of them!”

With the votes tallied up, everyone received high rankings. Here are the final results:

#1: Molly’s Kind of a Big Dill Pickle Eggs

#2: Jonathan’s Jalapeno Popper Eggs

#3: Tie between Cate’s Nashville Hot Eggs and Stephanie’s Dilled Devil Eggs


Even though a winner was declared, all the entries were delicious and unique. Try them all and then have fun experimenting with other spices in your next batch of eggs.
