Recipe: Beer Can BBQ Chicken
Beer can chicken is one of the easiest ways to grill a whole chicken. It just requires a can of beer, a generous amount of your favorite BBQ rub, and a little patience to keep turning the chicken on the grill so it chars evenly.
- 1 whole chicken (about 4 lbs.)
- 1 Tbsp. Salt & Pepper Tableside Seasoning
- 4 Tbsp. Choice of BBQ rub:
- Woody Creek BBQ Seasoning
- Team Sweet Mama
- Georgia Boys All-Purpose BBQ Rub
- 1 (12 oz.) can light beer
- Aluminum foil pie tin or piece of heavy-duty foil
- Choice of BBQ sauce or mop sauce (optional)
*Optional: Try this with our 'Cue Glue!
- 2 to 3 tsp. Cue Glue per lb. meat
*Savory's 'Cue Glue helps the seasoning stick to your protein and seals in moisture. Simply slather on 2 to 3 tsp. per pound on all sides of the meat then apply the seasoning.
For a tender and juicy beer can chicken, brine the chicken for 4 hours or up to overnight using Savory’s Brining Mix. It's also a great recipe for trying out one of our easy-to-use Smoke Cans, which will smoke for up to an hour on a gas or charcoal grill.
Pat chicken dry with paper towel. (*Slather chicken all over with 'Cue Glue if using before rubbing chicken with seasoning.) Rub chicken generously with salt & pepper and BBQ rub of choice. Preheat grill. For charcoal grill, move coals to one side of the grill. Slide chicken over open beer can so it stands up on its own, resting on the can. Set beer can chicken on an aluminum pie tin. (Or use heavy foil to create a makeshift tray; fold up the edges of the foil to make a slight bowl shape to any catch dripping juices.) Set beer can chicken in its foil base on grill on the opposite side of the heat source. Cover grill and cook chicken for a total of 1 to 1½ hours until meatiest part reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees. Rotate chicken a quarter turn every 15 min. for even cooking, basting it with optional BBQ sauce or mop sauce with each turn. Remove chicken from grill and let rest 10 to 15 min. before carving and serving.
Serve with your favorite BBQ sauce.
