How to Use
About this Spice
What is espresso powder?
Espresso powder is finely ground, spray-dried coffee, more concentrated than instant coffee and made to dissolve quickly in both dry and liquid recipes. Ours is made from premium Brazilian Robusta coffee beans, giving it a bold flavor with bitter notes and a smooth finish. It's not meant to be brewed as a drink on its own, it's a baking ingredient used in small amounts to deepen flavor.
How do you use espresso powder?
It dissolves quickly, so you can add it directly to dry ingredients in a baking recipe, or dissolve it into a liquid like milk, cream, or water first if a recipe calls for that. It pairs especially well with chocolate and vanilla, which is why it shows up so often in mocha desserts, but it works in savory cooking too. Stir 1 to 2 tablespoons into chili, sauces, stews, or a BBQ rub for a darker color and deeper, more complex flavor, no coffee taste, just more depth.
How much espresso power should I add to brownies?
Most brownie recipes use 1 to 2 teaspoons for a standard 8x8 or 9x9 pan, enough to intensify the chocolate flavor without making the brownies taste like coffee. Start at 1 teaspoon and add more to taste on your next batch if you want it more pronounced.
How much espresso powder do I add to chocolate cake?
For a standard two-layer cake, 1 to 2 teaspoons dissolved into the wet ingredients is the typical starting point. As with brownies, it's there to round out and deepen the chocolate flavor rather than add a coffee taste, so start light and adjust.
Does espresso powder make baked goods taste like coffee?
Not in small amounts. Used correctly, it enhances and deepens chocolate flavor rather than adding a noticeable coffee taste. You'd need a much larger amount for coffee to become the dominant flavor.
Is espresso powder the same as instant coffee?
No. Espresso powder is more finely ground and more concentrated, made specifically to dissolve fast for baking. Instant coffee can sometimes substitute in a pinch, but it's weaker and won't dissolve quite as cleanly.
Does espresso powder contain caffeine?
Yes, it's real coffee, so it does contain caffeine, though the amount used in most recipes (a teaspoon or two) is small relative to a cup of brewed coffee.
How should I store espresso powder?
Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct light, same as any ground spice, to preserve its flavor.
