World Flavors

Savory Spice Shop is one of the few spice vendors that sell turmeric that has been ground fresh in small batches. Turmeric root is a member of the ginger family and is used for its flavor as well as its color. For thousands of years natives of India used turmeric as a dying agent which produces an exquisite golden orange color.

In Indonesia, the natives would use turmeric to dye their bodies as an important part of the wedding ritual.

Turmeric can replace the golden color provided by saffron in many dishes, but won't replace the exquisite flavor. Turmeric’s flavor is bitter, astringent and pungent. Ground turmeric is an important ingredient to ras el hanout and many curry powder and pastes. Adds a subtle flavor and color to vegetables, bean and rice dishes.

What is Organically Sourced?

Products with the "Organically Sourced" designation have been grown and cleaned organically. Once these products are received by our warehouse in Denver and opened to be repackaged into Savory Spice jars, they no longer qualify as organically certified, but the methods for producing them are in line with organic standards. Products that are Organically Sourced will include "ORG-S" on the front of the label.

This root is bitter and pungent with floral, citrus, and ginger notes and pairs well with cumin, cloves, mustard seeds, and pepper.

Add to vegetable, bean, and rice dishes. Essential to curries, masalas, and ras el hanout. Use to add a golden color to many dishes.

For 5-6 T of mix: Blend 4 T turmeric with 1 1/2 t ground ginger and cinnamon, 3/4 t pepper, and 1/2 t ground cardamom (optional)
