About this Spice
What is Mediterranean basil used for?
It's an essential ingredient in Mediterranean cooking and works especially well with tomatoes, olives, mozzarella, poultry, seafood, pasta, and pizza. It also pairs beautifully with capers, garlic, mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary, and thyme.
What's the difference between Mediterranean basil and California basil?
Mediterranean basil is milder with a more subtle anise note, while California basil is sweeter and more vivid thanks to a more advanced dehydration process. Both work in the same recipes, it largely comes down to how bold you want the basil flavor to be.
Is this the same as European Basil?
Yes. This is the same basil previously sold under the name European Basil. Only the name changed, the leaf and flavor are identical.
How much dried Mediterranean basil do I use in place of fresh?
Use about 1/3 of the amount called for when substituting dried basil for fresh, since dried herbs are more concentrated in flavor.
How long does dried basil last?
Stored in a cool, dry place, dried basil typically holds its flavor for 1 to 2 years before gradually losing potency.
