Sweet Jerk Barbecue Sauce

Brush jerk sauce on pork, beef, or chicken. Mix sweet jerk BBQ sauce into shredded meat for a barbecue sandwich and top with pineapple slices and coleslaw. Shake well before use, refrigerate after opening.

Thanksgiving of 2016 found Janet and I in Grenada, the island known for nutmeg and cacao. Turkey wasn’t on the menu, but jerk chicken was. What made it so different wasn’t just the spice rub or the grill, it was the slather of sweet American BBQ sauce brushed on at the end. I remember tasting it and telling Janet, “I’ve got to make a version of this.” That spark led to Sweet Jerk BBQ Sauce.

Back in the test kitchen, we built the base with the bold spices of Jamaican jerk, added a hit of allspice, and rounded it out with molasses and cider vinegar for balance. The result is a sauce where Caribbean heat meets Midwestern barbecue sweetness: sticky, spicy, and layered with flavor. We even entered it into the American Royal World Series of Barbecue Sauce Contest, where it earned 15th place in its category, including a perfect score from one judge.

Using Sweet Jerk BBQ at at home: Brush onto chicken or ribs in the last few minutes of grilling for a glossy, caramelized glaze. It’s also delicious mixed into pulled pork and piled high on a sandwich with pineapple and slaw.
