Frankincense is the aromatic resin from the Boswellia tree. The tree is scraggly yet hardy rumored to grow out of solid rock. To extract frankincense, the bark is slit and the sap seeps out, drying into hardened “tears”. The name is thought to come from “incense of Franks”. Reintroduced to Europe by the Frankish crusaders. Another theory about the name is that “frank” may mean “of high quality”. Frankincense is used in perfumery and aromatherapy. It does not have a culinary use, but we carry it for those who use it as an incense or as a symbolic gift during the holiday season.

Myrrh is the aromatic resin from the Commiphora tree native to Somalia and eastern Ethiopia. Highly prized in ancient times, myrrh was at one time worth more than its weight in gold. When burned as an incense, myrrh produces a heavy, pungent scent. Instead of evaporating or liquefying, myrrh ‘blooms’ or puffs up when burnt. It was said that the Roman Emperor Nero burned a year's worth of myrrh at the funeral of his wife, Poppaea. Myrrh is used in perfumery and aromatherapy. It does not have a culinary use, but we carry it for those who use it as an incense or as a symbolic gift during the holiday season.
