Unboxing Popcorn Premiere Spice Set

When you think of the classic popcorn trio, you almost always think of cheesy, sweet, and salty. Our Popcorn Premiere spice set is a Savory Spice spin on the traditional popcorn tin. With triple the flavor options, there really is something for everyone.

The process of creating new seasonings, like many good creative processes, starts with an idea. In this case, popcorn. We’ve long known that people love to use our spice mixes, especially our dips & dressings, to spice up their popcorn and decided that we needed to have some “official” popcorn seasonings.

What Are Some Good Seasonings To Put On Popcorn?

Once we set our sights on popcorn seasonings, we knew cheese had to be in the mix. We tried a few different cheesy flavors, including smoky and spicy, but everyone agreed that the classic cheesy sprinkle just couldn’t be beat. When someone mentioned that it looked (and tasted) like mac & cheese, the lightbulb went on in the test kitchen. Ok, maybe someone leaned against the light switch at just the right moment, but it was obvious that inspiration had struck too!

Suddenly, food inspired flavors started tumbling forth. Salt & vinegar, baked potato, cookies, pickles, beer cheese, French toast. We started to think about food and flavors in a whole new way. After millions of kernels were popped, butter melted, seasonings mixed, popcorn tasted, and plenty of discussion, we narrowed it down to three winning flavors.

Why Is Cheese Popcorn So Good?

We’ve already made some delicious cheese blends. One thing we learned from experience is that you can never have too much cheese. If one cheese is good, two is better…so what about five different types of cheese? Yes, you read that right. Our Creamy Mac & Cheese Popcorn Seasoning gets its rich, creamy, cheesy flavor from an artfully blended combination of Bleu, Asiago, Parmesan, Romano, and Cheddar cheese powders.

Part of what makes cheese popcorn so good is the balance of savory, umami, and salty. So we employed buttermilk powder to add a slight tang, then topped it off with just a bit of popcorn salt. Added to that, the cheese flavor makes you think “creamy” while the popcorn brings the crunch. It’s that explosion of flavor and texture that makes cheesy popcorn so craveable.

You might be thinking, ok, you call this flavor Creamy Mac & Cheese, so can I make mac & cheese out of it? Sort of. Boxed mac & cheese powder has other ingredients, so it won’t be just like the blue box. But can you sprinkle it on your buttered noodles? Absolutely! We also created a cheese sauce recipe (remember that beer cheese inspiration) with pretzel dog, that's perfect for a game day snack.

Dill Pickle Popcorn, Are You Serious?

Heck yeah! There are two kinds of people in this world, those who think pickle popcorn sounds intriguing and those who think it sounds, well, not so good. Here’s the thing, if you like mustard pretzels or salt & vinegar chips, you just have to try it. The salty, savory combination hits the spot!

This seasoning has all the classic pickle spices: garlic and dill weed along with a pinch of chile and pepper for a little oomph. A dash of citric acid boosted that vinegary tang and a touch of honey powder balanced all those savory flavors, adding depth and complexity that had us going back for another bite, and another…and Garlic Dill Pickle Popcorn Seasoning was deemed a success.

It doesn’t have the exact ratios to make perfect pickles – we have a great Bread & Butter Pickles recipe for that. But if you want to infuse tangy, salty flavor into other dishes, it’s a great option. We strongly suggest trying it on a variety of potatoes. Savory Spice customer Traci says that, “it is a great addition to mashed potatoes as well as potato salad.” If you’re looking for a recipe to start with, try our Garlic Dill Pickle Crispy Potatoes.

Ok, we know savory and salty aren't the go-to options for everyone. If you have a sweet tooth, don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about you! Of course, caramel is the classic sweet popcorn seasoning but you know we had to spice it up just a little bit.

Sweet is good but there has to be balance and a bit of intrigue (just like a good romance movie). So we reached for our best-selling cinnamon, sweet and spicy Ground Supreme Saigon Cinnamon. It was then that we realized we were heading down the sweet and twisted path of sticky buns or cinnamon rolls.

And can you have a cinnamon bun without a bit of decadent vanilla frosting? Well, sure, technically you can…but why would you want to?! Enter Vanilla Bean Sugar and buttermilk powder, the ideal sweet and tangy duo to mimic a delicious icing.

Voila! Frosted Cinnamon Bun Popcorn Seasoning made its debut. It’s sticky, it’s sweet, it’s got a pop of cinnamon and a touch of vanilla. And, it turns out to be absolutely perfect for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up, whether it’s on popcorn or in a tasty coffee cake.

 Three Ways To Enjoy Popcorn

Hungry yet? Well, we have to be honest, we were inspired by movie night when we started thinking about this tasty trio. Cheesy comedies, bold action flicks, and sweet romances pair perfectly with these blockbuster flavors.

Popcorn, it's not just for movies any more!

If you are looking for some other ideas, try these three ways to enjoy your popcorn.

  1. A great snack for watching the game! Make three big bowls and set them out with your favorite veggies and dips.
  2. A no-cook snack dinner. Maybe you had a late lunch and just need a little something snacky instead of a full dinner. Grab your fruit of choice (sliced apples sprinkled with Saigon Cinnamon, perhaps), your must-have popcorn seasoning, and top it off with your beverage of choice.
  3. Parties! Popcorn might not be a party food that immediately comes to mind but it's a great surprise swap for the tried-and-true chips & dip. Small drink cups can pull double duty as mini popcorn bowls. Whether you're throwing a birthday party, holiday open house, or just having some friends "pop" over, these choose-your-own-adventure flavors will please everyone.
