Are all spices vegan?
Most single-ingredient spices are naturally vegan. They come from plants like seeds, roots, and dried herbs. Where things can differ is in blended seasonings, which may occasionally include dairy-based ingredients like cheese powder or butter flavoring. At Savory Spice, the vast majority of our spices and seasonings are vegetarian or vegan-friendly, with only a few exceptions.
Which seasonings are not vegan?
Some blends that aim for creamy, cheesy, or buttery flavor profiles may include dairy-derived ingredients. These are typically clearly labeled, so it’s easy to spot what to avoid if you’re following a vegan diet.
Can I use your seasonings for plant-based cooking even if they aren’t labeled “vegan”?
Yes. Many of our blends aren’t specifically labeled as vegan but are still completely plant-based. This collection simply highlights some go-to options, but it’s far from the full list.
What are the best spices for plant-based cooking?
Bold, layered flavors make plant-based dishes shine. Think garlic, smoked paprika, cumin, chili powders, herbs, and globally inspired blends. Seasonings that add depth, like umami-rich or smoky profiles, can help recreate the savory richness often associated with meat-based dishes.
How can I add more flavor to vegan dishes?
Layering is key. Start with aromatics and spices early in cooking, then build with herbs, acidity (like citrus or vinegar), and finishing salts. Using spice blends designed for global cuisines can also instantly elevate simple plant-based ingredients.
